Guantanamo Bay is an inefficient, ineffective blight on our national character. Not only has it been the central player in America's ongoing inhumane treatment of prisoners (many of whom are demonstrably innocent), but it is a symbol of America's fear in the face of international disapproval towards America's decades of war waging around the globe. Instead of examining the repercussions of our foreign policy, the leaders of America have instead chosen to exhibit an embarrassing paranoia about who our enemies are, and how much of a threat they actually pose, imprisoning even children and civilians who have no affiliation with any terrorist organizations.

Mr. President, keep your promise. It is time for the policies that led to America's reliance on Guantanamo Bay as a fix-all solution for handling terrorism to end. It is time for Guantanamo Bay to close.

In the words of one of our past great leaders:

"This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory." --Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Please sign our petition and send a clear message to our nation's President that we expect our country to uphold the values of our Constitution and not bow in fear to those who think our country is not strong enough to let innocent people walk free or let the criminal receive a fair trial.
