Close Collier County schools for Veterans Day

Close Collier County schools for Veterans Day
The Issue
I am a Veteran, and like many of my fellow servicemen and women, I deeply feel the significance of Veterans Day. This is not just another holiday—it's a solemn occasion to honor the sacrifices made by countless individuals for the freedom and security of our nation. Veterans Day should be a day where all Veterans, along with their families, can take time to reflect, commemorate, and celebrate their contributions and those of their peers.
However, in Collier County, the current policies do not align with this sentiment. The Collier County School District continues to hold classes and keep district buildings open on Veterans Day. For those of us who have served in the military, as well as for the children and families of Veterans, it's crucial to have this day off. It’s an opportunity for families to come together, participate in community events, and pay tribute to all those who served.
Statistics show that there are over 18 million Veterans in the United States, with thousands residing in Florida alone, many in Collier County. Each of these individuals deserves a moment to be recognized and appreciated. Closing schools and district buildings in Collier County on Veterans Day would not only show respect for these individuals and their families, but it would also send a powerful message to the community about the value of service and sacrifice.
We, therefore, urge the Collier County School District to revise its calendar and close all school and district buildings on Veterans Day. This act of recognition would provide Veterans and their families, as well as the wider community, the opportunity to honor and participate in ceremonies and events that highlight the history and importance of this day.
Join us in showing respect and gratitude to the Veterans who have given so much. Sign this petition to help make Veterans Day a recognized day of rest, reflection, and recognition in Collier County. Your signature can make a difference.
