Close Aid for Women Crisis Pregnancy Center

The Issue

Pregnancy Center on Broadway
We, the undersigned, urge the Chicago City Council and local health authorities to take immediate action to close Aid for Women, a crisis pregnancy center located at 6145 N Broadway, Chicago, IL 60660. This facility, funded by the Catholic Church, is known to disseminate misleading and medically inaccurate information regarding abortion. It presents a one-sided perspective that omits critical reproductive health options, such as abortion and emergency contraception, jeopardizing the health and autonomy of individuals seeking comprehensive care.

As a public health student and Students for Reproductive Justice member at Loyola University Chicago, I advocate for accessible, evidence-based healthcare. Scientific research consistently disproves the misinformation being spread by this center. For example, Aid for Women falsely claims that surgical abortions increase the risk of breast cancer, cervical cancer, infertility, and miscarriage. However, peer-reviewed Chicago studies, including those published in the PubMed and BMJOpen (DOI: 10.3109/13625187.2011.570883; DOI: 10.1136/bmjopen-2015-009698), found no causal link between abortion and cancer or infertility risks.

Illinois recently enacted the Deceptive Practices of Limited Services Pregnancy Centers Act (SB1909), empowering the Attorney General’s office to investigate crisis pregnancy centers that spread misinformation. We demand that local officials and health authorities put an end to the center's deceptive practices and use this law as the basis for investigating Aid for Women. This center's dishonest tactics endanger public health by disseminating inaccurate information about reproductive health, particularly to vulnerable individuals who are making critical healthcare decisions.

Sign this petition to demand accountability and ensure that all reproductive health services in our city are based on sound medical evidence, not ideology.
