Clean Up the NBA: Launch an Independent Commission on Gambling Corruption
The Issue
The NBA is facing its biggest integrity crisis in decades.
A federal investigation has led to the arrest of NBA head coach and Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups, along with other current and former league insiders, in a sprawling gambling and corruption scandal. Accusations include insider betting, mafia-linked poker games, and leaking confidential injury information to profit off games — some of which they coached or played in.
The FBI says this is “just the tip of the iceberg.” And fans are left asking: Who’s really watching the game?
While the NBA has suspended those under arrest, it’s clear the league’s internal systems failed. This scandal didn’t involve fringe figures — it reached the highest levels of coaching and former MVPs. What’s worse: the NBA was already warned. After Jontay Porter was banned for betting violations, the league promised reform. But now, it’s obvious that self-policing isn’t working.
We, the undersigned, demand the immediate creation of an independent commission to investigate and prevent gambling corruption in the NBA. This commission should:
- Operate independently from NBA ownership and league offices
Include former athletes, legal experts, and sports integrity specialists - Be empowered to audit betting data, interview personnel, and release public reports
- Recommend structural reforms — including changes to prop betting, team culture, and reporting protocols
This isn’t about blaming one player or one coach. It’s about rebuilding trust in the entire system. Sports fans invest time, money, and emotion into a game they believe is fair. That trust has been violated — not just by those arrested, but by the silence and delay from league leadership.
If the NBA truly believes in integrity, it must act now. Independent oversight isn’t a threat — it’s a lifeline. Baseball did it after doping. FIFA did it after bribery. The NBA must do it for gambling.
Sign this petition to demand a full, independent commission into gambling corruption in professional basketball — because we deserve a game that’s honest, accountable, and transparent.
