The issue

Our oceans are drowning in waste, and it's a heartbreaking sight that hits close to home for many of us. The beautiful marine wonders we cherish are at risk. It's not just an aesthetic issue; the trash is a silent killer, threatening our precious animals and marine life.

Every day, thousands of marine animals perish due to ingesting or becoming entangled in the plastic and debris contaminating our waters. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, their favorite food, leading to fatal blockages. Birds become entangled in discarded fishing nets and lines, unable to free themselves. This is not the world we want to leave for future generations.

Scientific studies estimate that around 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans annually. This staggering number is equivalent to a garbage truck full of plastic being dumped into the ocean every minute. If we continue at this rate, by 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish. This devastating prediction highlights the urgency for immediate action.

Our oceans not only serve as home to countless species but also play a crucial role in maintaining our planet's climate by regulating temperature and atmospheric gases. The pollution not only affects marine life but also contributes significantly to climate change and global warming.

We urge global leaders, environmental organizations, and governments to prioritize cleaning our oceans. We propose the implementation of large-scale ocean cleanup initiatives and stricter regulations on waste disposal and management. Technologies are already in place that can efficiently harvest and recycle ocean debris, such as aquatic drones and floating booms.

Let's come together to protect and restore our marine ecosystems before it’s too late. Your support is crucial in convincing those in power to take decisive action. Please sign this petition and be part of the solution to preserve our oceans for generations to come.
