My precious daughter, at just five months old, has been diagnosed with Chiari malformation type 1. This is a condition that affects the brain and spine, causing symptoms such as headaches, balance problems and muscle weakness. Despite these debilitating symptoms, it is not currently recognized as a disability.

Chiari malformation type 1 is more common than many realize. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), it affects about one in every 1,000 births in the United States. Yet despite its prevalence and impact on quality of life, it lacks recognition as a disability.

Classifying this condition as a disability would provide much-needed support for those affected by it - like my daughter - including access to necessary services and accommodations that can improve their quality of life.
