Clarify esthetician scope of practice in New Mexico
Clarify esthetician scope of practice in New Mexico
The Issue
Personal Story:
As a licensed esthetician, spa owner, and provisional licensed instructor in New Mexico, I am acutely impacted by the current ambiguity surrounding our scope of practice. Having dedicated my life and career to advancing skin health, providing quality education, and building a thriving business in my community, this issue is not just a bureaucratic inconvenience for me—it affects my livelihood and the livelihoods of countless professionals across the state. The services being placed under scrutiny are not trivial; they are essential esthetic procedures integral to our profession.
The Issue:
Currently, there is an alarming lack of statutory clarity regarding key esthetic procedures such as dermaplaning, superficial chemical peels, nano infusion, and microneedling in New Mexico. This lack of clear guidelines has fostered confusion and repetitive conflicts between licensing boards. The absence of a unified standard not only undermines our ability to deliver consistent, quality care but also creates significant operational hurdles for those of us who are licensed professionals.
Why It's Important:
Estheticians rely on these core services to sustain their businesses and grow professionally. The inability to offer these services due to undefined legal parameters hinders our career progression and directly affects our financial stability. Furthermore, the clients who trust us with their skin health and beauty needs are impacted as well. They too deserve consistency and expertise that can only be pledged through clear legislative language.
The Solution:
We are not asking for vague clarity. We are asking for these services to be clearly written into New Mexico law for licensed estheticians: dermaplaning, chemical peels, lash lifts, brow lamination and tinting, nano infusion, facial machines, and microneedling up to 2.5 mm.
Call to Action:
Sign this petition to support licensed estheticians in New Mexico. We are not asking for gray areas or vague interpretation. We are asking New Mexico lawmakers to clearly put these services into law for licensed estheticians: dermaplaning, chemical peels, lash lifts, brow lamination and tinting, nano infusion, facial machines, and microneedling up to 2.5 mm. Please sign and share to help us protect our profession, our businesses, and our right to perform the services we are trained to provide.
