Help Save Downtown Galt from Cambridge Mill Overdevelopment

The Issue

Help inform Cambridge City Council of concerns over the proposed development of a 28-storey hotel and 37-storey condo at 130 Water Street North in Galt, Cambridge, Ontario.

The proposed development will affect everyone who lives, works, and visits Downtown Galt. It will dramatically change the character of the historic downtown area.

The hotel is twice the height allowed by current zoning regulations. The condo tower is three times the height allowed by current zoning regulations. The design and density of the development dwarfs anything in the area.

Cambridge City Council needs to instruct Pearle Hospitality to redesign the plans for 130 Water Street North to be more suitable and size-appropriate for the Galt riverfront area.

Our concerns with the development are over

  • increased traffic and truck congestion along Water Street
  • increased sound pollution due to traffic, deliveries, and maintenance vehicles
  • costly impacts to public services. including water treatment, road, and sewer infrastructure
  • the creation of "urban heat island" compounding issues of climate change
  • environmental issues, including clean water sources, storm water containment, and effects on wildlife in the area
  • loss of open space and river access
  • lack of an affordable housing initiative, increasing the costs of current rentals and affecting the housing supply throughout the city
  • negative impacts to human health through urban highrise isolation and increased emergency response times
  • the developer and city overlooking the Heritage Master Plan recommendations of the area
