A Call for the Government of Karnataka To Improve the Welfare of Stray Animals
Edit- After witnessing horrific flooding due to incessant rain in Bangalore, some of us are lucky to have found safe havens in hotels, relatives' and friends' homes and we could move our pets too.
Can you spare a moment to think of the stray animals on the streets who have been searching for a dry spot in and some food and water?
This is my re-appeal on the 7th of September to the Chief Minister's Office to please act at least now in the gravest hours. Please build shelters for the voiceless, I am positive we can find endless sponsors and caretakers. It is our constitutional right to take care of animals so let us make Bangalore wake up to the apathy shown to the voiceless.

On New Year's Eve, My heart broke as I witnessed a stray dog being hit with a rod by a shopkeeper as I drove by. I turned around and tried to educate him against the violent act that he had just committed. His response appalled me.. he said ‘ it’s just a dog’!
I can still hear the cries of the poor creature in my head.
It was disheartening, but then I realised that there are hundreds of animals who face this dilemma everyday and nothing substantial has been implemented to either criminalise these acts (besides a small fine) or protect and give care to these animals who have no choice but to roam the streets.
Thousands of dogs, cats, horses and cows roam the streets with no measures in place for their wellbeing.
On paper, India has laws to prevent crimes against animals. Our Constitution casts a duty on every citizen to show compassion towards animals and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 punishes all kinds of crimes against animals – with a fine of just Rs 50.
I am appealing to the Chief Minister of Karnataka Sri Basavaraj Bommai, Minister of
Animal Husbandry Sri Prabhu B.Chauhan, Director of the
Dept. of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services Dr Manjunath S Palegar and PETA India.
I would like the Government of Karnataka to bring in measures for the welfare of stray animals and have neutering drives, by partnering up with firms looking for CSR initiatives, private firms for funding or individuals who are passionate about animal welfare like myself and introduce harsher laws for animal abuse.
By building shelters and treatment centres in the outskirts of the city, with government veterinary services, food and facilities for animals, could also be an opportunity for job creation by employing locals in the outskirts of Bengaluru as caretakers and spreading compassion in the garden city.
My India stood for compassion and Ahimsa once upon a time! I want that back.
