Why this petition matters

UPDATE:

To everyone who has signed this petition, we cannot thank you enough. Your support means the world to us, and we are forever grateful.

Chattahoochee High School is an extremely accepting place, and we are so blessed to have been given the opportunity to attend. They are so accepting of all people, regardless of background, race, gender, or sexuality, and it's understandable as to why that this close to the Prom date they felt it unnecessary to change royalty voting for this year.

However, for that reason, this petition is now shifting focus to the future. We want change the focus, so that in future people in a similar situation as ours can have an equal opportunity as heterosexual couples. The same goal still stands, but with focus on the future, instead of this year's Prom.

Additionally, this petition is not just for our school, but all schools. No kid, not matter where they live, should be forced to live unequally. And we are hoping to stop just that.

We want to make a lasting impression, and with your help, we are going to be able to! Thank you all again for your support, and keep on signing and sharing!

ORIGINAL POST:

Chattahoochee High School is refusing to allow equal representation of people of all genders and sexualities at Prom.  When it comes to Prom, we are all familiar with the iconic voting for Prom King and Queen. Based simply off of its general history, it is rooted in being a couples contest - hence why the name is King and Queen (an allusion to a married couple of royalty).  This year, there are six deserving nominees for Chattahoochee's Prom King and Queen, consisting of two couples - one heterosexual and one homosexual. Because of this situation, we proposed the idea of simply switching the name from Prom King and Queen to Prom Royalty.  In this case, it would allow for two people, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, to win. This not only allows the chance for a homosexual couple to possibly win, but it also ensures that the most deserving people win. This means that if the most deserving of the nominees are two girls, they would both be allowed to win, instead of historically only allowing one to be crowned royalty.

It is time for a change, and for that we will not go lightly.  Please help us achieve this by signing this petition. Every signature matters, and we hope you will help us reach our goal.
