Support the Unemployed, Hold the Tennessee Dep. Of Labor (Unemployment) Accountable.
The Issue
Following the COVID-19 pandemic making it's entrance into the United States, many Americans were unfortunately furloughed from their jobs and have filed for unemployment benefits. Though weekly income from these state benefits are only a fraction of a living wage, for many it's the only way to stay afloat, keep a roof their heads, and stay safe from the virus during these uncertain times. Since October 4th, 2020 The Tennessee Department of Labor (unemployment) initiated a "Job Search Mandate" that requires those currently accepting state unemployment benefits to actively apply for jobs to be eligible for their weekly income. They have however listed exemptions to the mandate including but not limited to those laid off due to the pandemic, and those of us slated to return to our previous employers. It is of my own experience, and the words of many testimonials that they have simply not stood by their promises, and have subjected those of us laid off for these reasons to forcefully participate in the job search in order to accept benefits, and not be disqualified from their services. These are people who may be elderly, at risk of severe illness, or people like me who take care of a loved one who is at high risk of a serious COVID infection, parents with children, etc. every day folks like you and me. We would rather be working than stuck at home with little income, but not if it means our state is going to force us into danger. There are also very many of us struggling to even communicate with the Department of Labor, get approved, there are many of us who are awaiting hearings regarding benefit appeals that are long overdue, among a plethora of other issues with this department and a lack of cooperation. It appears that the state of Tennessee would rather bolster the workforce and put their citizens at risk, than protect the health and safety of their citizens.
Article XI - Section 10 of the Tennessee State Constitution - “A well regulated system of internal improvement is calculated to develop the resources of the state, and promote happiness and prosperity of her citizens, therefore it ought to be encouraged by the general assembly.”
As of 10/29/2020, there have been 251k cases of COVID-19 and a reported 3,209 deaths in Tennessee.
8.98 million cases in the United States, and around 228k deaths in our great nation.
There must be action now before we risk any more lives thrown into uncertainty, illness, or death for the sake of commerce. Please sign to tell Tennessee to start taking care of their people, to stand by promises made by the Tennessee Dep. of Labor, and tell them to do their jobs, repeal the mandate. Protect the unemployed! Thank you.
