Change YorkU’s ADMS 2610 Final to Being Open Book

Change YorkU’s ADMS 2610 Final to Being Open Book
The Issue
As students of the "ADMS 2610 - Elements of Law" course at York University in North York, Toronto, we have been grappling with an immense challenge. The midterm exam was not just a test of our understanding but also a test of memory. We were required to memorize terms and concepts from 13 chapters, which proved to be a daunting task for many. This difficulty is set to escalate with the final exam covering 30 chapters.
The pressure is further compounded by the fact that students also taking "ADMS 2320 - Business Statistics," another demanding course, will have their exam scheduled just hours after ours. This leaves us with little time for rest or revision for either.
In law schools and even in the experience of our own professors, open book exams are common practice. These exams allow students to demonstrate their understanding and application skills without being burdened by rote memorization. In real-world scenarios too, legal professionals are not expected to recall every detail from memory but rather apply their knowledge effectively.
We believe it is only fair that our final exam should follow this format as well. An open book exam would allow us to focus on understanding and effectively applying concepts rather than merely recalling them under pressure.
We urge you to consider this change for the benefit of all students enrolled in "ADMS 2610 - Elements of Law". Please sign this petition if you agree that converting our final exam into an open book format would be a more equitable assessment method.
