Change the Perception of Bipolar Disorder

The Issue

Living with bipolar disorder is an intimate part of my life, a condition that profoundly influences my daily lifestyle. Despite facing these challenges head-on, I still encounter a world that often misunderstands what it means to live with bipolarity. Society typically labels individuals like me as unstable or even dangerous when in reality, we are simply people managing a complex mental health condition, which is beyond us, and we are also getting no assistance from any sources.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health disorder characterised by extreme mood swings and stress, which include emotional highs known as mania or hypomania and lows of depression. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 2.8% of adults in the United States are affected by bipolar disorder. Globally, it's estimated that about 60 million people have this condition, according to the World Health Organisation.

The stigma surrounding bipolar disorder exacerbates the struggles of those affected. It discourages people from seeking help and creates barriers in their personal and professional lives. Individuals with bipolar disorder often face discrimination, impacting employment opportunities, relationships, and access to proper healthcare, a barrier in their present society.

The broader public needs accurate information and awareness about bipolar disorder to foster empathy and understanding of care. Educational initiatives should be encouraged in schools, workplaces, and communities to dissolve misconceptions and bring to light the true nature of the disorder. Mental health specialists, alongside educators, can provide workshops and seminars that delve into the nuances of mental health, spotlighting bipolar disorder's effects and realities.

Legislation should also be enacted to protect the rights of individuals with mental health disorders, ensuring they receive the respect and accommodations needed in both public and private sectors. This includes mental health days, reasonable accommodations at workplaces, and comprehensive mental health coverage.

Help transform the perception of bipolar disorder from something scary and unknown into an understanding of a medical condition that requires attention and empathy. By signing this petition, you can support the charge towards a more inclusive and informed society. Let's demand change, promote education, and create a world where everyone understands and respects the realities of bipolar disorder. Please sign and help us make a difference. A person suffers in silence, and people don't understand the present illness. No present business in the UK supports this illness. No two days are the same for a person with bipolar, and stress isnt good for any person who suffers from bipolar. The help the council provides is very hopeless; their 24-hour call centre has no idea about mental health, and the present service is useless. A person suffering from bipolar disorder has to have their own support in place. I depend on music and also my religion, that's what helps me through the present illness. You should keep your mind active at all times; otherwise, the illness can affect you physically and socially. Having a loving family can help, but most families fail to support each other. The family put their lives first. Clarence is the only family member who cares daily about me. He has his life to live, so I can't expect too much. Religion and music is my only source of comfort in isolation and darkness
