Change the OED definition of "Witch"

The Issue

To the Editors of the Oxford English Dictionary,

We, the undersigned, are writing to request a revision of the current definition of the word "witch" in the Oxford English Dictionary. The current definition reads: "A person (typically a woman) who practices witchcraft or magic, esp. of a malevolent or harmful nature."

This definition is problematic for several reasons:

Gender Bias: By specifying that a witch is "typically a woman," the definition perpetuates a gender stereotype that has historically contributed to the persecution and marginalization of women. This is not only inaccurate but also discriminatory.
Negative Connotation: The phrase "esp. of a malevolent or harmful nature" implies that the practice of witchcraft is predominantly harmful. This overlooks the diverse and often positive practices associated with witchcraft, which can include healing, protection, and spiritual growth.
Lack of Inclusivity: The current definition fails to acknowledge the broader, nature-based spirituality associated with modern witchcraft practices, which often focus on manifestation, intention setting, and a deep connection to nature.
In light of these concerns, we propose the following revised definition:

"Witch": A person who practices witchcraft or magic, often involving nature-based spirituality, manifestation, and intention setting.

This revised definition is more inclusive, accurate, and respectful of the diverse practices and beliefs associated with witchcraft. It removes the gender bias, eliminates the negative connotation, and acknowledges the positive aspects of modern witchcraft practices.

By adopting this revised definition, the Oxford English Dictionary can contribute to a more accurate and inclusive understanding of witchcraft, reflecting the evolving nature of language and the diverse practices of those who identify as witches.

We urge the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary to consider this revision and to take a step towards a more inclusive and accurate representation of the term "witch."

Sincerely,
