The Issue

Growing up in Tampa, I have always been disheartened by the fact that one of our most beloved public spaces is named after Curtis Hixon, a figure whose legacy is stained by actions that dismantled the Scrub, a historically Black community, and who actively opposed the voting rights of Black residents. I simply cannot reconcile enjoying the beauty of this park while it bears the name of someone who worked against the values of equality and inclusion that our community strives towards today.

Curtis Hixon’s policies and actions left a lasting negative impact on many families in Tampa. Not only did he contribute to the marginalization of Black residents by removing them from their homes, his efforts to suppress their voting rights echo a dark chapter in our city's history—a chapter we should not continue to honor.

I propose renaming Curtis Hixon Park after Derrick Brooks, a man who embodies the best of Tampa’s values and history. Derrick Brooks is not only a legendary Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ linebacker, but also a community leader, philanthropist, and someone who has dedicated himself to the upliftment of Tampa’s youth through education and mentorship. His efforts have positively impacted countless lives, particularly in empowering underprivileged children and advocating for their opportunities and success.

Renaming Curtis Hixon Park to Derrick Brooks Park would reflect our commitment to honor individuals whose legacies inspire unity, inclusion, and progress. It's a chance for our city to make a meaningful change that aligns with our current values as a welcoming and diverse community.

Please sign this petition to urge the City of Tampa to rename Curtis Hixon Park to Derrick Brooks Park. Let’s take this important step in celebrating a legacy of positivity and community strength, rather than one of division and exclusion.
