As of recent years, the Ministry of Justice has reported that only 10% of sexual violence victims report to the police. Of that 10% , only 3 out of 100 reports result in a charge for the perpetrator of the act. Of that 3 out of 100, only 1 charge results in a conviction. People are suffering everywhere throughout Aotearoa in relation to receiving justice for sexual violence cases. Part of the reason for this is the unclear guidelines about what actually constitutes as rape or sexual violence in The Crimes Act that we use during investigation and court cases. My aim with this petition is to change what The Crimes Act refers to as non-consensual sexual activity to create a clearer and more fair argument when regarding sexual violence cases. Changing the language used in The Crimes Act will help provide people with a broader lens to make claims about their sexual abuse without fearing that the legal definition of non-consensual sexual activity will stop them from obtaining justice.
