The issue

My friends' kids, much like many others, are passionate junior surfers who have dedicated countless hours to honing their skills. However, these talented young athletes are often sidelined in their final year of secondary school, missing out on key competitive opportunities. Currently, the competitive age criteria for Junior surf comps excludes those in Year 12 who are often still 18 or younger.

This not only discourages these dedicated surfers but also stymies their progression in the sport at a crucial time. High school students in Year 12 should have the chance to continue participating in junior competitions, reinforcing their connection to the sport and their community.

In Australia, surfing is more than just a sport; it’s a part of our culture and identity, especially for those living in coastal regions. Restricting Year 12 students from competing in Junior surf comps fails to acknowledge their dedication and growth in the sport.

We need to amend the regulations to allow competitors to partake based on their age and not their academic year. This simple change would empower students, keeping them engaged in the sport they love while completing their education.

Let's support our young surfers and help pave the way for their future by updating the competitive age criteria to age-based rather than academic year-based eligibility. Please sign this petition to ensure that students in Year 12 can continue to compete in Junior surf comps. Together, we can make a change for the better!
