The Issue

My daughter has twice been denied access to a toilet at school during her period. She suffers from excessive blood loss and severe pains during her cycle, and this has led to leaks and embarrassment during school hours. As if dealing with the physical discomfort wasn't enough, she has also been issued detentions for leaving the classroom to go to the toilet to change. This is not just unfair—it is humiliating and exacerbates the challenges faced by young girls during their periods.

Current school policies that restrict toilet access are out of touch with the realities that menstruating girls face. Periods are a natural part of life, and denying access to toilets during such a critical time is not just inconsiderate; it fuels unnecessary stigma and makes the school environment hostile for students during their menstrual cycle.

Statistics show that over half the female population will experience a period at some point, and it is estimated that a significant portion of school-aged girls suffer from some form of menstrual discomfort. To compound this with stress and shame due to restrictive policies is both inhumane and unjust.

Schools have a responsibility to protect the wellbeing of their students. Allowing access to toilets during periods is not an excess but a necessity. It is a fundamental aspect of supporting a safe and conducive learning environment for everyone. By changing these policies, we can ensure that all girls feel comfortable and supported in their educational settings.

Therefore, we call on school administrators and policymakers to revise these outdated rules and implement practical solutions. These may include:

1. Educating staff and students about menstruation, reducing stigma.
2. Permitting unrestricted use of restrooms for menstruating individuals without penalty.
3. Installing gender-neutral, accessible bathrooms for privacy and convenience.
4. Providing menstrual products and resources within school toilets.

Please sign this petition to urge schools to create an inclusive environment where girls no longer have to choose between comfort and compliance. Together, we can foster an educational system that respects and addresses the natural needs of all students.
