South Florida is home to so much diversity. Yet we still honor a man, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, who was a known racist, arms smuggler and segregationist.  In 1907 he proposed that every black person be evicted from the state of Florida. 

As a resident of Broward County, as a citizen of a post segregated nation, I propose a name change. We need not honor a man whose ideologies represented a horrid and hateful past. 

Let’s make our future proud. Small changes can make a big impact and speaks volumes as to who we are today, who we plan to be going forward. One day our children will question why we knowingly continued to honor such a man. Let us lead by example and make the change we want to see in the world. 

To those in power, this rest on your shoulders. What will your legacy be?
