The Issue

For the past three years, I have been a member of an inclusive Brownie unit, a place where children of all needs are celebrated and integrated into our community. But even in such an inclusive space, we face challenges due to the language used in Girlguiding's badge syllabi. Words like "see" and "spot" make some of the activities inaccessible to our visually impaired members. Imagine the discouragement they feel when faced with language that indirectly excludes them from fully participating.

In our unit, we have always found creative ways to adapt activities to ensure every child feels included and valued. Yet, these adaptations remind us of the underlying issue: the language within the badge syllabi is simply not inclusive enough. By changing a few key terms, we can remove this barrier. For instance, substituting words like "see" with "explore" can create a more inclusive and welcoming experience for all Girlguiding members.

Research from the Royal National Institute of Blind People highlights the impact of inclusive language in educational settings, underscoring its crucial role in ensuring that all children, regardless of their abilities, feel included. Moreover, studies have shown that inclusive environments foster better social skills and a higher level of empathy among all participants.

By adjusting the language, we can help ensure that all children, regardless of their abilities, can equally participate in and enjoy the Girlguiding programme. This change aligns with Girlguiding's mission to empower all girls and create safe, inclusive environments that celebrate diversity.

I urge Girlguiding UK to review and update their badge syllabi to incorporate more inclusive language. This small change can make a significant impact on the lives of visually impaired members, ensuring that every child feels valued and empowered.

Please sign this petition to encourage Girlguiding to take this important step toward true inclusivity. Your support can make a world of difference in the lives of many children.
