The Issue

In the current academic environment in Wake County high schools, there has been a noticeable decline in student grades, which is causing concern among both students and teachers. I am a student who has been personally affected by this issue, and I can attest that many of my peers share my frustrations. Our grades have been declining not due to a lack of effort, but because of a grading policy that does not accurately reflect our learning or abilities.

I’ve witnessed teachers, who are dedicated to their roles, express their dissatisfaction with this system. They want to see their students succeed and feel that the current grading policy is hindering rather than helping. It has become increasingly clear that this policy needs to be re-evaluated to promote a fair, motivating, and conducive educational environment that truly supports student growth.

Statistics indicate that a significant percentage of students are experiencing stress and anxiety due to grades not reflecting their genuine understanding or effort. According to the American Psychological Association, students' mental health is closely tied to academic pressures and perceived performance.

We are asking the Wake County School Board to take these concerns seriously and work collaboratively with educators, parents, and students to develop a grading policy that fairly evaluates student learning, rewards improvement, and reduces undue stress. Consider alternative systems, such as standards-based grading, which have shown positive outcomes in other districts by focusing on mastery of subjects rather than cumulative scores.

Implementing a revised grading system would not only benefit students greatly by better reflecting their true capabilities but would also restore teachers' faith in the system and enable them to teach more effectively. Together, we can foster an academic environment that encourages learning and success for all students.

I urge you to sign this petition as a step towards a more equitable and effective grading policy in Wake County high schools. Your support is crucial in ensuring that every student receives the academic assessment they deserve.
