Change "Downtown Largo" to just "Largo"

The Issue

In late 2022, The Washington Metro renamed the "Largo Town Center" station to "Downtown Largo" despite giving out surveys and them having the option of Downtown Largo or just Largo. Most people who took the survey (myself included) voted for just Largo but despite that and pressure from PGC council members the word "Downtown" had to be included in the name because of recent land redevelopment in that area. This decision by the board was to add the term "Downtown" in it because of a conspiracy theory the WMATA board and staff of riders only opposing it because of them being "emotionally attached" to names. This was said but the survey answers from people were never released publicly at lest from my knowledge to prove that theory.

I can't speak for anyone except myself since I don't know exactly what other people wrote as their answers. I can tell everyone that I am not the type of guy who says thing just because of "emotional attachments" or "resistance of change" like some staff members and board members may speculate.

The reasons why the Downtown Largo station should be shortened to just Largo only.

  1. The Vast majority of those who ride on the metro system say "Largo only" as well as train operators when stopping at stations on the way ex: if a train operator is serving Clarendon, he or she would typically say over the microphone "Silver Line to Largo, next station is Court House".
  2. The PIDS screens in stations and on the destination signs on eastbound Blue and Silver line trains say "Largo" only (Largely because the destination signs are only so big but the points still stands).
  3. Those who are unfamiliar with the DC area and are just visiting might see the term "Downtown Largo" and may or may not misinterpret it as a part of Downtown DC not realizing it is a dozen miles east and in the suburbs since the term 'Downtown" can have many different meanings and the goal of these way findings is to make sure an area is being identified by the name of the area or geographical features it is located in.
  4. Tysons Corner around the same time this transaction was made was shortened from "Tysons Corner" to simply "Tysons" so why not do the same thing here by just saying "Largo" if the term "Town Center" isn't relevant anymore?

Metro means everything to me and has always been there for me in both good times and in hard times. I am a lifelong Blue Line rider so I know the Largo area better than most people. I personally never saw anything wrong with the term "Largo Town Center" since the first station on Silver line phase 2 that opened in late 2022 has the term "Town Center" in it as it is named "Reston Town Center" mainly because of the shopping center near that station and the Largo Town Center it is a popular shopping area itself in Prince George's County but if the term "Town Center" is no longer a feasible term for the Largo area, why not just shorten it to "Largo" only without the term "Downtown"?

I understand that government council members and developers have referred to Largo as the "Downtown of Prince George's County", using the term "Downtown" literally doesn't seem appropriate for a suburban area since the system is called the "DC Metro" not the "Largo" Metro. All these points can dictate that while I can't speak for anyone else besides myself, the theory of "emotional attachments" or "resistance of change" doesn't always apply to topics like these.
