The issue

As a resident of Dargan, I respectfully request Australia Post to consider our plea for changing the postcode of our community from 2786 (a Blue Mountains post code) to 2790 (Lithgow postcode), aligning more appropriately with Dargan's geographic, logistical, and community realities.

Logically, Dargan is more closely aligned with Lithgow in terms of governance and community interaction. The current situation forces us into unnecessary logistical complexities as our existing postcode associates us incorrectly with the Blue Mountains. Many of our community engagements, resources, and affiliations are in Lithgow, making the alteration of our postcode to 2790 a practical and sensible adjustment.

This issue affects all residents of Dargan profoundly. Historically, we were required to collect our mail from the Mount Victoria Post Office. This task became especially troublesome during the Covid-19 lockdowns when it meant crossing into a red zone, endangering our safety and compliance. As of September 2024, the closure of Mount Victoria Post Office compounded our challenges, now forcing us to travel an additional 7 kilometres to Blackheath Post Office. This extra distance causes significant inconvenience, particularly since most of us conduct our daily business and shopping within Lithgow, where our council rates are also paid. It now requires a special trip solely for mail collection, adding unnecessary travel time (40 km round trip) and costs.  With the increases in fuel costs this now is a very costly trip just to collect our parcels and mail.

With the recent closure of Great Western Highway, Dargan is now part of the detour and the increase in traffic on this road has become very dangerous.  Changing the post code will enable the residents to reduce the number of times they have to make unnecessary trips on that road.

The Postie delivering to Clarence and Hartley , drives directly through our area, further reinforcing the logistical sense of aligning us with the 2790 postcode. Additionally, state maps clearly show that Newnes Junction is part of Dargan, and yet it already has the 2790 postcode.

Changing Dargan's postcode to 2790 would not only streamline mail services but also have a positive impact on residents’ and other benefits are an improvement insurance premiums, which are often affected by postcode classifications.

We urge Australia Post and relevant authorities to recognize this important adjustment as not just a postal modification, but as a means to respect the true affiliations and daily practices of Dargan residents. Your support in signing this petition would greatly strengthen our appeal and help initiate necessary changes to improve the quality of life for everyone in Dargan.
