Change Cervical Screening from 5 to 3 Years

Change Cervical Screening from 5 to 3 Years
The Issue
My personal journey with cervical health has been both harrowing and life-changing. My beloved grandmother, a vibrant soul, was taken from us at the tender age of 54, just three months after being diagnosed with cervical disease. The tragic loss meant she never met most of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. My mother, my pillar of strength and my best friend, had to undergo a full hysterectomy to mitigate the risks associated with cervical cancer. The thought of living without her is unbearable. When I was 30, I faced the biggest scare of my life; the letter following a cervical screening saying their were abnormalities and I needed to have a further inspection at hospital; during this procedure the consultant explained she required a biopsy to send away for further testing. My head was full the thought of planning farewells to my then 6-year-old child, fearing I might not witness their growth and be able to share his life with him.
Recent government changes have extended cervical smear tests from once every three years to once every five years. This decision is alarming and poses significant risks. Cervical smears play a critical role in early detection of abnormalities that could develop into cancer if left unnoticed. The reduction in frequency is a threat to timely diagnosis.
We need only look at Jade Goody's story to understand how vital frequent check-ups are. Jade's premature departure from this world left her beautiful children motherless. It's a stark reminder of the necessity of early detection and intervention to prevent the loss of loved ones.
Extending the interval between tests to five years endangers women's lives. Cervical cancer, when caught early, is highly treatable. Delaying screenings could lead to increased incidence rates and, tragically, mortality.
We urge health authorities to reconsider this decision. Facts and statistics show that more regular screenings have consistently saved lives. The UK, renowned for its healthcare system, should not compromise on such an essential test.
Please, support this petition to revert cervical smear tests back to every three years. Lives depend on it. Sign and share this petition to make sure no family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to a preventable disease.
