Change and regulate the K-pop industry to protect artists
Le problème
The members of the group NewJeans—Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein—began their careers in 2022, while still minors. Hailing from a talented and creative generation, they captivated the world with their authenticity and dedication to the creative process. Thanks to their determination and talent, they achieved skyrocketing success. However, instead of flourishing in supportive environments, they are now trapped by the industry, confined to restrictive and arbitrary contracts.
Kpop companies and agencies such as HYBE, SM, JYP, YG, Blockberry, or Attrakt, which manage young talents, continue to maintain oppressive practices, demanding an excessive share of their success and restricting their artistic and personal freedom, often also at the expenses of their mental and physical health and their individual rights on a daily basis.
This obviously does not just concern NewJeans, but also other groups under different labels. These practices harm not only the artists but also the fans who admire their freedom of expression and creativity.
Beyond the stars of NewJeans, it is the protection of all K-pop artists that is at stake. We must call on the Korean system to recognize these artists as workers in their own right, possessing inalienable human rights and deserving of adequate legal protections. The K-pop industry, a symbol of Korean popular culture, must evolve to respect and protect those who contribute to its global success.
Let's demand concrete changes:
1. Revised contracts to guarantee fair and equitable conditions for all artist
2. Implemented regulations that protect artists' human rights
3. Legal recognition of K-pop artists as workers with all associated rights
The time has come to ensure the K-pop industry respects the dignity and well-being of its artists.
Together, let's raise our voices against abusive contracts and degrading practices. With your support, we can ensure K-pop artists can express themselves freely and pursue their passions without fear or restriction.
Sign this petition to regulate the K-pop industry and give artists the freedom they deserve.
