Recognize Endometriosis as a disability in the United States

Recognize Endometriosis as a disability in the United States
The Issue
Endometriosis is a debilitating disease that 1 in 10 women have or will develop some time in their pubescent life. It causes adhesions (scar tissue) to form due to tissue that mimics endometrial lining to form outside of the uterus and attaching onto multiple organs in the body. It causes severe pain, infertility, extreme fatigue, bloating, depression, hot flashes, and in some cases, death. Endometriosis has been found on every single organ in the body, including but not limited to: uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes, the spine, liver, kidneys, brain, heart, and even the skin. The leading cause of death from endometriosis is suicide due to incorrect pain management and feeling as if we aren’t being heard. Endometriosis is a cancer- like disease. There are cases of death due to adhesions tearing open and ripping the organs apart and many other issues as well.
People who have endometriosis are not taken seriously by doctors and when we are seen, we are told to “lose weight”, “get over it”, “it’s just period cramps”, and so many other things when there is much more going on than that.
Endometriosis causes severe and debilitating pain outside of our menstrual cycle, causing women to have frequent emergency room visits, losing their job due to not being able to show up because of the pain, multiple painful and invasive surgeries, hysterectomies, and hospital stays. This disease is NOT currently recognized as a disability but there needs to be a change.
