The Issue

The implementation of Flock Safety cameras in Lebanon may have been intended to enhance community safety, but it raises significant privacy and security concerns that affect all of us. As a resident of Lebanon, I am deeply troubled by the potential invasion of privacy and the insufficient safeguards against data misuse and breaches.

Flock Safety cameras are designed to capture and store data about the vehicles in our neighborhoods, including license plate numbers and travel patterns. While the intention might be to deter crime, the reality paints a different picture. According to a study conducted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, such surveillance systems are prone to errors, can lead to racial profiling, and are often used to monitor innocent citizens rather than catching criminals. In fact, a report by The Atlantic revealed multiple cases where similar systems led to wrongful accusations and unnecessary legal troubles for innocent individuals.

Moreover, the security of the data collected by these cameras is questionable. A 2021 investigation by Motherboard found that Flock's data could potentially be accessed by a wide range of entities, including third-party contractors. This lack of stringent data protection protocols underscores the urgent need to reassess the use of such technology. In an age where data breaches are increasingly common, the risk of allowing sensitive data to circulate without adequate protection could open the door to identity theft and other privacy violations.

We need to act now to ensure that our community is not subjected to intrusive surveillance without thorough justification and rigorous safeguards. We demand that the use of Flock Safety cameras in Lebanon be halted until a comprehensive review is conducted, addressing the privacy implications and ensuring robust security measures are in place.

This isn't just about cameras; it's about the rights of the citizens of Lebanon to live without unwarranted surveillance, and the assurance that their personal data is being protected.

Please join me in signing this petition. Together, we can urge local officials to prioritize our privacy and security and take meaningful action against unjust surveillance practices.
