Caring Shouldn’t Come at a Cost: Pay Vet Nurses Fairly

Caring Shouldn’t Come at a Cost: Pay Vet Nurses Fairly
The issue
Veterinary nurses across Australia care for animals with skill, compassion, and dedication—often at great personal cost. Their work is physically demanding, emotionally exhausting, and carries the immense responsibility of protecting lives that cannot speak for themselves.
Veterinary nurses are far more than “assistants.” We are phlebotomists, anaesthesiologists, radiology technicians, dental assistants, laboratory technicians, therapists, receptionists, and critical care providers—often all in the same shift. We are highly trained, qualified professionals who play a vital role in every aspect of animal healthcare.
Yet despite this expertise and responsibility, many veterinary nurses struggle to afford basic necessities like rent and groceries. The current award rate for a qualified veterinary nurse sits at just $30.68 per hour, with most employers refusing to pay above award. This is not reflective of our skills, workload, or the level of care we provide.
Passion for animals is too often used to justify unfair wages, leading to burnout, financial stress, and skilled nurses being forced to leave the profession they love.
We urge the government to increase the award wage for veterinary nurses.
Veterinary nurses deserve fair pay that reflects their qualifications, expertise, and the essential role they play in caring for Australia’s animals.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for veterinary nurses and supporting a fair, sustainable future for those who dedicate their lives to animal care.
