Cancel pipeline surveillance contracts in Nigeria

The Issue

In the heart of the Niger Delta, where black gold flows beneath the earth, economic inequality persists among the inhabitants of the region. The wealth from Nigeria's oil should be a blessing to all, yet it has largely benefited only a select few. The contract for pipeline surveillance, crucial for safeguarding this precious resource, was handed to private security firms like Tantita Security Services, PINL, and Makon Engineering, whose founders are now billionaires seemingly overnight.

These private entities, associated with prominent figures such as Tompolo, Olu of Warri, and Matthew Tolangha, have amassed wealth by accessing government contracts intended for the protection of Nigeria's lifeblood—its oil. They live lavish lives, hosting celebrities and Instagram influencers, showering them with millions of dollars in what I can only describe as reckless extravagance. Meanwhile, local communities, living amidst the infrastructure that fuels the nation’s economy, continue to live in poverty.

The disparity in wealth distribution is staggering. The communities where these pipelines run should be the first beneficiaries of any contracts associated with the resource. By awarding surveillance contracts to these communities directly, they can create local employment opportunities, increase social infrastructure, and ensure those who live closest to the pipelines are the ones guarding them. Local knowledge and vested interest in protecting their land cannot be underestimated.

It's an assertion for justice and equity, a shift from enriching a select few to empowering the community. Our resources should uplift us all, not just the connected elite. We call for the cancellation of these contracts with Tantita, PINL, and Makon Engineering. We urge the Nigerian government to re-allocate them to the local communities along the pipeline routes.

Sign this petition to demand a fair redistribution of wealth, for the future of our communities, and for the prosperity of every citizen who deserves a share of Nigeria’s riches. Let us work together to ensure the oil of Nigeria fuels not only cars, but dreams and hopes across our land.
