Canada requires a National Alert System for vulnerable missing persons

The Issue

The Amber Alert System is an essential tool in communicating the abduction of a person, most commonly a child, via social media broadcasting and electronic roadway signs. Unfortunately, the Amber Alert is only used in abduction cases and not for missing individuals. Currently, Canada does not have a National Alert System in place for missing vulnerable citizens, such as the silver alert system, which is used in the United States.  The Silver Alert system is a public notification system to broadcast information regarding missing persons, especially senior citizens with dementia and/or Alzheimer's.  We started this petition three years ago with no action to date.  The time is now to broaden the alert system in Canada to include missing children with disabilities, such as Autism, and seniors living with Dementia and/or Alzheimer's. As the mother of a Nonverbal Autistic child, it is one of my greatest fears that my daughter may wander off on her own and does not have the ability to communicate who she is, or the mental capacity to understand what to do if she is lost.  Children with ASD commonly wander off, can be impulsive and may bolt from a safe setting when attracted to anything that has sparked their interest, including large bodies of water.  Often times, this is also the case for elderly people who suffer from Alzheimer's and/or Dementia.  It is time for Canada to recognize an alert system is necessary to protect the well being of our most vulnerable people.  Whether the subject of an abduction or an individual who is missing and cannot communicate, we are all responsible for the vulnerable citizens living in our community and the only way to help them is knowing who, what, where and when, as fast as possible and to get the word out to as many people who are able to help. If it saves a life, it is worth it!  xo SiSi's Auesome Squad
