Healing and Forgiveness: Keep a Family Together
Healing and Forgiveness: Keep a Family Together
The Issue
I felt deep despair after the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, thinking of the all the families affected. We all did. Therefore, I know we can agree it would be awful to let this tragedy cause more unnecessary grief.
Which is why I’m starting this petition to keep Jaskirat Singh Sidhu in Canada.
Our justice system worked. He was convicted. He received 8 years in prison. And once his sentence is complete, he is banned from driving for 10 years. He is remorseful.
So that is where his punishment should end.
Continuing to punish the same man over and over will not bring any more peace, or justice. And it will not make our roads safer. More consequences for one man will not fix poor company safety policies and government regulations that also contributed to the cause of this accident.
He was responsible for every aspect on the road, and he is paying his debt to society for that. But he is not responsible for the factors that put an inexperienced worker, of only 3 weeks, in that driver’s seat - alone. Therefore, leniency should be granted when it comes to keeping him in Canada. He doesn’t deserve to be deported - away from his family and the place where they have built a life.
And if you’re having trouble sympathizing because of the severity of this event, let’s remember:
1) the words of sympathy for him that circulated online after the accident, supported by more than 130,000 Canadians - including truck drivers stating that, they too, worry about the grave accidents their vehicles could potentially cause on the road, and
2) we forgave Scott Moe and elected him as the leader of our province, after he failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign - killing a mother and injuring her son. For this, his second driving offence, he served no jail time, and was given a traffic fine for driving without due care and attention.
Stop the hurt.
In 6 years, or less, let’s begin the forgiveness. So we can heal.
