Living with a disability presents daily challenges, some of which are exacerbated by financial difficulties. Although I am not on the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), I empathize deeply with my brothers and sisters who rely on this essential support. The Alberta Government's clawback of the Canadian Disability Benefit from nearly 77,000 Albertans has only worsened these challenges, removing crucial funds that many depend on.

Currently, up to $184 million per year is being deducted from the pockets of individuals who rely on the Canadian Disability Benefit. This policy affects those who are already facing significant hardships, destabilizing their financial situation at a time when they most need stability and support. For individuals receiving AISH, each dollar clawed back means less access to necessities like  medication, housing, and daily living expenses.

The clawback policy not only strips away financial security but also dignity and independence from those affected. Data shows that individuals with disabilities experience higher poverty rates, lower employment opportunities, and face additional barriers in their daily lives. By reversing this policy, the Alberta government can help alleviate some of these pressures and enable affected Albertans to live with greater security and dignity.

Solutions to this issue are clear and actionable. The Alberta government must repeal the clawback on the Canadian Disability Benefit for AISH recipients. This policy change not only supports individual financial needs but also represents a step toward a more inclusive and supportive community for all Albertans. Lawmakers have the power to make this change happen, ensuring a fair and just system for everyone.

Further, it sends a fearful message to the next generation of Albertans living with disability and their families.

Support this cause by signing the petition today. Let's join forces to ensure that those living with disabilities in Alberta receive the full benefits they deserve and that their quality of life is not further compromised. Rise up and urge the government to take action now. Sign this petition to help make a difference in the lives of thousands of Albertans.
