The issue

Gawara Baya is not just a location on a map—it is a precious, irreplaceable habitat teeming with life, where the wonders of nature are in full display. This area is home to many threatened and migratory species, from the cherished northern koalas to Sharman’s Rock Wallabies, Northern Greater Gliders, Red Goshawks, and the Magnificent Briodfrog. Over 20 endangered species, as listed by both state and federal authorities, find sanctuary in Gawara Baya. It stands as an ecological haven, adjoining the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, which boasts some of the most outstanding universal values of natural beauty and diversity.

Currently, the proposal to develop the Gawara Baya region into a wind farm threatens to disrupt this delicate balance that nature has maintained for ages. The region serves as an essential buffer zone, a natural bulwark protecting the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. At a time when climate change and human encroachment are endangering natural reserves worldwide, it's imperative that we preserve such areas for future generations.

Designating Gawara Baya as a national park is not just beneficial but necessary. Other properties to the north already enjoy national park status; Gawara Baya should not be left behind. There is an urgent need to protect the unique ecosystems and the myriad of species that call it home. By calling in the Gawara Baya Wind Farm proposal, we can redirect resources into sustainable development strategies that respect the ecological integrity of this land.

We appeal to government stakeholders, environmental agencies, and local communities to act now. Elevating Gawara Baya to national park status will reinforce our commitment to environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation.

Let's ensure that future generations can witness the magnificence of Gawara Baya's wildlife and natural beauty. Protect Gawara Baya, protect the future.

Please sign this petition to halt the wind farm development and champion the establishment of Gawara Baya as a national park. Together, we can make a difference.
