Call for the Removal of Lindsey Hoyle as Speaker of the House of Commons

The Issue

I never envisioned a time when I, deeply disturbed and personally affected, would have to call for the removal of a standing Speaker of the House of Commons. Over the years, I've observed with increasing horror as the UK, my home, continues to supply arms to Israel, thereby backing actions that result in the tragic loss of innocent civilian lives.

What has pushed me to this point was the defiance of centuries of parliamentary tradition this past February, led by Speaker Lindsey Hoyle. Historically, the Speaker's chair has represented adjourning conflicts and urges to respect human life. However, recent actions have steered away from that path, with potentially disastrous consequences. The Speaker's actions could inadvertently have led to the deaths of thousands of children in Gaza.

In 2020, the United Nations documented that at least 8 children were killed in Gaza due to conflict and violence, while hundreds were injured (UN OCHA). This figure does not account for the possible uptick in casualties that could have resulted from the Speaker's actions.

We cannot stay silent while lives are at risk. Now is the time to reclaim the role of Speaker as a symbol of diplomacy, peace, and respect for human life. We urge the necessary bodies to consider the implications of Speaker Lindsey Hoyle's actions. Remove him from the post to uphold the sanctity of the House of Commons.
