The issue
As an artist and supporter of free speech, I am deeply concerned by the recent actions taken by the Adelaide Festival board members who voted to uninvite Dr. Randa Abdel-Fattah from participating in the Adelaide Writers Week program. This decision not only stifles important voices and narratives, but it also undermines the very essence of what festivals like the Adelaide Writers Week are meant to promote - a platform for thought-provoking dialogue and open discussion, free from censorship.
The exclusion of Dr. Abdel-Fattah, a respected writer and advocate for important societal issues, has sparked a significant backlash from the artistic community. Hundreds of writers and artists have pulled out of the program in protest, expressing their dissatisfaction with the board's out-of-touch decision. This mass withdrawal is not only an act of solidarity with Dr. Abdel-Fattah but also a stand against the censorship and silencing of diverse voices and perspectives.
The repercussions of this decision extend beyond the loss of talent at the festival. Artists now find themselves grappling with the moral dilemma of either potentially risking their income or being seen as complicit in this act of censorship. The damage to the reputation of the Adelaide Festival, as a champion of free expression and creative liberty, is significant and immediate.
To rectify this situation, it is imperative that the Adelaide Festival board reassess and revamp their decision-making process, ensuring that it aligns with the values of inclusivity and free expression. We call for the immediate removal of board members responsible for the exclusion of Dr. Abdel-Fattah and urge the board to reinstate her to the program.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for artistic freedom and supporting an inclusive space where diverse ideas and opinions can be shared and debated. Let us ensure that the Adelaide Writers Week remains a beacon of free expression and an embodiment of cultural diversity. Please sign this petition to urge the Adelaide Festival board to make the necessary changes and uphold the foundational principles of free speech and artistic integrity.
