CALL FOR IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT OF FREEWAY BARRIERS LAVERTON NOISE LEVEL AS HIGH AS 120db

CALL FOR IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT OF FREEWAY BARRIERS LAVERTON NOISE LEVEL AS HIGH AS 120db
The issue
The residents of Laverton and concerned citizens, are calling for the immediate replacement of the failing wooden freeway sound barriers along Tyquin Street.
Families Living Directly Adjacent To The Freeway Walls Are Being Subjected To Noise Levels As High As 120db.
To put this in perspective:
- The World Health Organisation recommends outdoor noise levels remain below 55dB for residential areas. Tyquin Street is currently recording levels more than double that recommendation.
- 120dB is the threshold where sound becomes physically painful and can cause immediate psychological and physiological harm.
The current 5-level wooden walls have reached a state of extreme degradation. They are structurally compromised and provide virtually no barrier against the deafening noise produced by the recent 4-lane freeway expansion. Recent independent noise testing has revealed that
The disparity is clear. Even nearby Briggs Street recorded 83dB — levels that are already too high for a peaceful home life — but the lack of adequate barriers on Tyquin Street has created a "sound canyon" that is destroying our quality of life.
We request urgent action from our government transport authorities:
- Prioritise the Tyquin Street corridor for the installation of modern, effective sound attenuation walls.
- Conduct an official environmental impact study to assess the health effects of the recent freeway expansion on Laverton residents.
- Commit to a timeline for construction that ensures these barriers are replaced before the end of the current fiscal year.
Our community deserves to feel safe and quiet in our own homes. We are not asking for a luxury; we are asking for the restoration of basic living standards that were stripped away by freeway expansion.
Sign this petition to demand that our health and well-being be placed above traffic throughput.
