Living in Carmarthen, I have witnessed firsthand the historical and economic changes in our beloved town. Carmarthen is a place that holds great significance for my family and countless others who call this town home. However, recent developments have raised concerns about the future of our community, particularly with regard to the costs surrounding the Debenhams building and the proposed demolition of the Wilko building to create more car park spaces—which could greatly impact our town both visually and financially.

No public consultation has been held on these matters, leaving many of us in the dark about decisions that will inevitably impact our daily lives. The costs associated with the development of the Debenhams site are escalating at an alarming rate, and the lack of transparency from the Carmarthenshire Council only heightens our concern. Such expenditures could potentially lead to increases in council tax and business rates, adding an undue financial burden on residents and local business owners alike.

In our town, we already face the challenge of empty storefronts and streets lined with barbers, vape shops, and other minor service businesses that struggle to sustain a vibrant community atmosphere. The funds being funneled into these current projects could arguably be better directed towards regenerating the town centre, promoting a diverse range of businesses that contribute to the economic and cultural fabric of Carmarthen.

Furthermore, the demolition of the Wilko building, a structure that holds its own place in our town's history, to make way for yet more car park spaces feels shortsighted and out of touch with the community’s needs and values. Parking is a concern, yes, but it should not come at the cost of our town’s character and heritage.

It's critical that the people of Carmarthen have a voice in these decisions, and that potential solutions are explored together with the input of the community.
