We need your help to get more signatures on this petition. It's going to go to the State Water Resources Control Board this week. To make it easier for you to help, we have written this short message below that we want you to forward on to 3 of your friends:
Dear Friend,
Can you sign this petition and help re-water the Kern River through Bakersfield? It is dry but it doesn't have to be. There is enough water. Simply putting water into the riverbed instead of canals doesn't result in any wasted water. This water is necessary to replenish the aquifer, which is badly depleted. The replenished groundwater can still be used elsewhere after it travels through Bakersfield.
Bakersfield already owns enough water to restore the river but has been prevented by lawsuits from restoring the river's flow. That's why we need public support to put pressure on our political leaders to bring back the river.
The Kern used to feed three enormous lakes (Kern, Buena Vista, and Tulare), sustaining millions of acres of wetlands across the Tulare basin. This water used to provide habitat for a plentitude of fish and migratory birds. Shouldn't we do what we can to put some water back in the river, both for wildilfe and for the quality of life of half a million people living in Bakersfield?
Please sign the petition at www.change.org/restorethekern Thanks!
