Legitimize Mountain Bike Trails in Calico Basin

Legitimize Mountain Bike Trails in Calico Basin
The Issue
The BLM is updating the RAMP (Recreation Area Management Plan) for the Calico Basin area. The draft plan states that mountain bikes will not be allowed on any trails in this area. The trails will remain open to hikers and equestrians. These trails include mountain bike favorites like Bad Bunny, Bermie Mac, Into the Sun, and David Flowie.
We are asking that the BLM reconsider allowing mountain bikes on the above-mentioned trails. Mountain biking is increasing in popularity and this has been exacerbated by the pandemic. NPD Sports estimates a 117% increase in bike sales in March/April 2020 over the same months in 2019. Mountain bike trail counts across the United States are showing increases of 100%-500% compared to the same time in 2020. 2021 has shown a similar boom; bike shops in Las Vegas and across the country cannot keep up with demand. This trend does not show any indication of slowing as the next generation is taking a keen interest in mountain biking. Mountain biking is currently the fastest-growing high school sport in the US.
It is critical for the Calico Basin trails to be legitimized to provide the growing number of Las Vegas mountain bikers trails that are easy to access, beginner-friendly, and connect to other trail systems in the area, the latter of which allows cyclists to avoid the busy Highway 159, reducing traffic congestion and improving safety. For these reasons, the Calico Basin trails are some of the most popular and inclusive among local mountain bikers.
The Calico Basin trails are essential to the MTB community as they are some of the only green-level trails in the valley. Due to this and their proximity to neighborhood schools, they are a popular riding and training location for local middle and high school mountain bike teams. The Southern Nevada high school mountain bike league (Nevada South NICA) has grown at a rate of over 100% each year since its inception three years ago.
Please sign your name and tell the BLM that you do NOT support their plan to restrict mountain biking from Calico Basin and you support allowing mountain bikes to access the Calico Basin public lands along with the already approved hikers and equestrians.
