We, the undersigned residents, families, community organisations, sporting groups, visitors and supporters of Cairns and Far North Queensland, call for Cairns to be recognised as a regional location for a mobile accessible Changing Places facility.

WHY CAIRNS NEEDS THIS FACILITY

•  People with significant physical disability can require a safe, accessible space with a hoist, adult-sized change table and appropriate room to receive personal care.
• Standard accessible toilets do not provide the equipment or space needed by many people with complex physical or personal care needs.
• A mobile facility could support beaches, sporting events, community events, tourism venues and other high-use locations across Cairns and Far North Queensland. Cairns is a regional community with a strong sporting, tourism and outdoor-event culture. Accessible infrastructure should enable everyone to participate, stay longer and enjoy our community with dignity.
• A regional mobile model would allow the facility to be deployed where it is most needed, supporting a range of local events, venues and community venues.
• There are only a limited number of accessible change facilities available in Cairns and surrounding areas. These are static and only available at specific locations.

OUR REQUEST

We ask decision-makers, funding bodies, councils, community organisations and potential partners to support Cairns and Far North Queensland's inclusion in the state-wide mobile accessibility model and to work together to secure, host and sustainably operate an accessible Changing Places facility in the region.

This petition will be used alongside letters of support and local use-case information to demonstrate community demand for the Cairns and FNQ region. The current proposal being considered includes five mobile units across Queensland, with local partnerships potentially involving Tourism NQ, surf life saving clubs, sporting organisations, tourist venues, Cairns Regional Council, the local universities and other community and event partners.
