Build more wheelchair accessible homes

The Issue

I am a wheelchair user living in a bungalow that does not have accessible entrances or a usable garden space. As a person with a disability, having an accessible home is not a luxury, but a necessity. Unfortunately, my story is not unique; many individuals and families with disabilities face similar challenges in finding a home that truly meets their needs. This has to change, and we can make it happen.

In the UK, there is a significant shortage of housing options that cater specifically to the needs of people with disabilities. According to research by the charity Leonard Cheshire, there are over 1.2 million wheelchair users in the country, yet only 7% of homes in England offer any basic accessibility features. This gap in the housing market limits independence and quality of life for individuals who require mobility aids.

Having wheelchair accessible homes means more than just providing ramps and wider doors. It means ensuring that all aspects of the home environment, such as the kitchen, bathroom, and garden, are designed with accessibility in mind. Creating new housing developments or renovating existing structures with these features can significantly improve the lives of so many.

We call upon the government and local authorities to prioritize the development of wheelchair accessible homes in their housing strategies. By allocating funds and planning resources specifically for this purpose, we can build inclusive communities where everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, has a place to call home that suits their needs. Moreover, developers need incentives to integrate accessibility features in new buildings, thereby making inclusive housing the norm rather than the exception.

Sign this petition to urge our leaders to act now so that more disabled individuals and their families can live in homes that truly accommodate their needs and allow them to lead fulfilling lives.
