Build a pedestrian overcrossing at law-school staircase

The Issue

The absolutely tragic loss of a USD student in a road accident involving an SDPD officer on Linda Vista has shaken our USD community. Linda Vista is notorious for its high-speed traffic, with cars often reaching alarming speeds exceeding 70 mph. Students take this route regularly, specifically to cross over towards student housing on Goshen and Riley street. This must be a wake-up call to implement infrastructure for the safety of our community.

Implementing a pedestrian overcrossing at the bottom of the Law School staircase is an attainable solution. It has been successfully implemented in similar situations, such as UCSD's Mesa Bridge, providing a safer route to cross a busy street. This initiative is not an extravagant ask of us. It is simply a necessary move towards prioritizing the safety and well-being of our students.

It is time we demand action from the University of San Diego, and the city of San Diego to prioritize our community's well-being. Sign the petition now and help urge our leaders for a safer future for all USD students.

Although the location referenced in the petition is not within Council District 9, we strongly believe every San Diegan deserves to feel safe traveling through their neighborhood, whether they are walking, biking, taking transit, or driving. Safe streets are a core part of building a city that works for everyone, and we are grateful to residents, students, and community members who speak up when they see a need for safer infrastructure. There is nothing more important than the safety of our children and young people. We have consistently advocated for the City to be more proactive in school areas and be quicker to respond to requests from parents, students, principals, and community members to install stop signs and other safety measures in school zones. We should never wait for a tragedy to happen before we take action to protect people. We remain committed to San Diego’s Vision Zero goals and to advancing the investments, street designs, and accountability needed to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries across our city.
