Living in the Lower East Side with my beloved dog has been both a joy and a challenge. This area, particularly around Forsyth and Chrystie Streets, is vibrant and full of life, yet it lacks a crucial amenity for many of us residents: a safe and dedicated dog run. The absence of such a facility affects not only our furry companions but also the community as a whole.

In recent years, the number of pet owners in the Lower East Side and Chinatown has increased significantly. Dog owners are left with few options for exercising their pets in a secure environment. The nearest off-leash dog runs are inconveniently located in other neighborhoods, requiring long walks or public transport across bustling city streets, potentially hazardous for both pets and owners.

Research indicates that daily exercise and social interaction are paramount to a dog's health and well-being. Without access to a designated area, many dogs in our community miss out on these essentials, negatively impacting not only their physical health but also their behavior and happiness.

Moreover, the interaction and gathering of dog owners in these spaces foster stronger community ties. It’s a place where individuals from different walks of life can come together, creating a sense of camaraderie and mutual support.

Our request is simple but impactful: we are calling for the development of a fully enclosed, off-leash dog run within Sara D. Roosevelt Park. This initiative falls in line with the NYC Parks Department’s mission to provide citizens with a diverse and engaging recreational experience. By incorporating a dog run, we not only cater to pet owners but also enhance the park’s appeal to all residents.

The space required is manageable and could be situated within the Forsyth/Chrystie corridor of the park. It would feature proper fencing, ground cover suitable for pets, adequate waste disposal facilities, and seating for owners. Furthermore, we propose a collaboration with local community groups and animal welfare organizations to maintain the dog run and ensure it meets safety and sanitation standards.

It is our hope that the NYC Parks Department, together with Council Member Christopher Marte and Manhattan Community Board 3, recognize the necessity of this amenity. Please consider this petition as a step towards a more inclusive and pet-friendly Lower East Side.
