The Issue

In the mid-2000s, I had the honor of building a Skills Park in the Carmi-Beaverdell area, sanctioned by Rec. Sites & Trails BC. This park became a beloved haven for riders of all ages and skill levels, fostering a culture of safety and learning.  Unfortunately, in 2026, Rec. Sites & Trails BC disassembled this cherished facility.

Shortly thereafter, the dirt-jump zone in the Cleland Greenbelt was also leveled. Today, Penticton stands without vital infrastructure for technical bike skills development.

The absence of dedicated, professionally-built facilities poses a significant risk. Without a proper Skills Park, people might resort to constructing unapproved and potentially dangerous 'rogue' skills parks in the forest.  A professionally-built park not only ensures safety but encourages skill development in a controlled environment, likely reducing potential injuries.

Penticton is renowned for its outdoor recreational opportunities, yet we lack a key component that could attract tourists, support local clubs, and maintain our community's health and wellness.  Many communities in British Columbia boast exceptional cycling infrastructure, including outstanding Skills Parks, which has shown to positively impact both local economies and community spirit.

The solution is clear: Construct a new, professional Skills Park in Penticton. By collaborating with professional park builders, the city could create a facility designed for long-term durability, reduced maintenance costs, and high safety standards.  Such a Skills Park could include features to accommodate riders of all proficiency levels, from beginners to experts, and be a venue for workshops, competitions, and community events.

Let us come together to call upon the City of Penticton and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the development of a new bike Skills Park.  By adding your signature, you can help ensure a safe, inclusive, and vibrant future for biking in Penticton.  Together, we can rebuild the infrastructure that inspires learning, boosts local tourism, and strengthens community bonds.
