Bryn Mawr College must stand up for transgender women
Bryn Mawr College must stand up for transgender women
The Issue
Presented by the Bryn Mawr College SGA Gender Inclusion Committee
We, members of the Bryn Mawr College community, find ourselves disgusted and horrified by the Trump administration’s attack on transgender women at Smith College. We support and affirm the college’s admission of transfeminine students and believe they belong at women’s colleges. We call on the leadership of Bryn Mawr College: President Wendy Cadge, Interim Dean of the Undergraduate College Tomiko Jenkins, Provost Dee Matthews and others, to vocalize their support for the transgender community and declare that they will stand against any future vitriolic and transmisogynistic attacks levied at the college. We call on Bryn Mawr College to affirm its commitment to equity and inclusion by issuing a statement that says transgender women are women, that they belong at Bryn Mawr College, and that the college will defend them in the event of attacks from the Trump administration. There is absolutely no excuse for silence at a time like this. There is no financial incentive or risk assessment more important than protecting the basic human dignity of all Bryn Mawr students. If the college’s administration continues to remain silent they are complicit in the transphobic, anti-human system of oppression that claimed the lives of 56 transgender Americans in 2025[1] and has already claimed 9 since 2026 began.[2][3] If they refuse to act, the blood of our transgender siblings is on their hands.
[3] These numbers are, in actuality, a vast under count as the deaths of transgender people often go unreported or their transness is erased posthumously.
