Do not permanently scrap the Norman Park Ferry Service

Do not permanently scrap the Norman Park Ferry Service

The issue

The closure of the Norman Park ferry service will result in additional vehicles on already overcrowded Brisbane roads, inconvenience to commuters and loss of productivity due to extended travel times. This council has spent millions of rate payer dollars on walkways and dedicated bicycle paths and bridges to reduce traffic congestion from motor vehicles - this move achieves the opposite and is total hypocrisy.

The ferry trip from Norman Park to the Newfarm Park terminal takes approximately 3 minutes - Council's alternatives, using the bus network and/or Citycat vessels, have travel times ranging from 42 mins to 1 hour and 11 minutes - if using the bus, there is also a route change required at the Cultural Centre. This is not an efficient transpot system.

The wooden ferries used at Norman Park and other routes were described by the Brisbane Lord Mayor Cr Schrinner, in September 2020, as an "icon of the city". These vessels are part of the cultural make-up of Brisbane and must be retained so that our wonderful city does not lose its unique flavour.
