Bring Tazewell County into the 21st century

The Issue

Growing up in Tazewell County, I've always cherished the sense of community and rich history that our area embodies. However, it's time for us to reflect and take an important step forward. As one of the counties lagging behind in inclusivity, Tazewell County is the only county in our state that does not observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 19th. This lack of recognition not only isolates us from the progress being made across the state but also perpetuates an outdated reputation that several of our cities hold.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a beacon of hope and a champion for equality. By officially recognizing his birthday, we are not merely honoring his legacy — we're embracing the values of unity and justice that Dr. King so passionately advocated for. This change isn’t just symbolic; it is a tangible commitment to our community's growth and a testament to our dedication to equality and respect for all.

Facts show that states and counties that celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on his birthday witness improved community relations and stronger educational initiatives around civil rights history. By aligning ourselves with such positive change, we provide educational opportunities, strengthen community ties, and present Tazewell County as a forward-thinking and inclusive place to live.

We urge our local leaders to take action now. Change the date of our observance to January 19th. Let us show that Tazewell County stands with the entire nation in recognizing the significance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s work and dreams. Join us in making a statement that we are ready to move forward together. Sign this petition to propel our county into the 21st century, respecting history, and embracing progress. Together, we can make positive change.
