Bring back traditional snow days in St. Vrain school district

Bring back traditional snow days in St. Vrain school district
The Issue
Growing up in Colorado, traditional snow days have always been a part of who we are—a safe pause in the winter storms and a chance to spend time with our families. But recently, the St. Vrain School District in Weld County has replaced these cherished days with online learning days. This change creates real challenges for students and families, and it’s why I’m asking the district to bring back true snow days.
Snow days aren’t just “days off.” They exist because weather conditions make travel unsafe. When parents still have to work and roads are icy, students may be left at home caring for younger siblings. Turning snow days into remote learning days makes this even harder because older students are expected to complete online assignments while also helping their families stay safe.
Not all families have equal access to fast internet, multiple devices, or quiet spaces. For many students, especially younger ones, completing online work during a storm is stressful or even impossible. Snow days were created to keep students safe—not to create more pressure or widen gaps between families with different resources.
This new approach also overlooks what snow days mean to Colorado students. They are a long-standing tradition that kids before us enjoyed—time to rest, recharge, and experience winter without the worries of school. Real snow days support students’ mental health and give families a chance to slow down together during severe weather.
Bringing back traditional snow days is not just about fun; it’s about fairness, safety, and honoring a Colorado tradition that supports the well-being of all students. Please sign this petition to urge the St. Vrain School District to restore genuine snow days so they remain safe, special, and accessible to everyone.
