The Issue

Growing up in a vibrant Italian community in Woking, I have witnessed first-hand the richness of our language and culture. It is more than just a means of communication; it's a connection to our heritage, a bridge to our ancestors, and a valuable tool for future generations. In our homes, we speak Italian to keep that tradition alive. However, it has become increasingly challenging when our children do not have the opportunity to learn Italian at their secondary schools.

In regions with large Italian communities, like ours, teaching Italian in schools extends beyond preserving language. It enhances cultural understanding, increases cognitive skills, and opens opportunities for students in multilingual environments. Italian is not just important to those of Italian descent; it is a language that benefits everyone. The global economy values bilingualism, and knowledge of an additional language can set our students apart.

According to the Modern Language Association, studies consistently show that learning a second language increases students' employability and earning potential. Moreover, Italian is one of the major cultures' languages, which means students educated in Italian can engage more deeply with European art, music, literature, and history.

Many parents in our Woking community have expressed a strong desire for Italian language courses to be reintroduced into the secondary school curriculum. Such educational programs have the ability to enrich our communities and bring us closer together. They create a more inclusive environment and foster respect for different cultures, leading to stronger, more cohesive neighborhood bonds.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the effort to bring back Italian language courses in secondary schools. This reinclusion would allow countless students to explore their heritage, gain valuable skills, and open up numerous opportunities for their future. Let's ensure that our children and future generations can enjoy and benefit from the linguistic and cultural diversity that Italian brings.

Sign this petition to make a positive change now. Together, we can make Italian an integral part of our secondary school curriculum once again.
