The Issue

Many Irvine residents enjoy outdoor wellness activities such as Tai Chi, line dancing, yoga, stretching, and low-impact group exercise. These activities promote physical health, balance, mental wellness, and community connection among neighbors.

However, Irvine parks currently don't have any covered outdoor spaces designed specifically for wellness activities. Strong sun and high temperatures often make it difficult to comfortably practice outdoor exercise during much of the day.

Our Proposal

We propose the creation of a Covered Community Wellness Pavilion in the planned Oak Creek Nature Park, with the possibility of adding similar structures in parks across all Irvine neighborhoods.

A simple open-air pavilion could provide a shaded space for community wellness activities such as:

• Tai Chi practice
• Line dancing groups
• Yoga and stretching classes
• Community wellness exercise

Pavilion Features

• A shade roof for sun protection
• Smooth flooring suitable for Tai Chi and dance
• Space for 30–40 participants
• Open-air design with natural ventilation

Health Benefits

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Tai Chi can reduce falls among older adults by 20–30% by improving balance and coordination. Accessible spaces for wellness activities support healthy aging and active lifestyles for residents of all ages.

The proposed Oak Creek Nature Park could serve as the first pilot location for this type of community wellness pavilion, which could later be incorporated into parks across Irvine.
